1991 Porsche 911 turbo hail damage repair

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, I have a great affinity for the Porsche 964 model. In my opinion this model series represents the quintessential air-cooled Porsche. So when this beautiful 911 turbo came to the shop for hail damage removal, I was extremely excited.

The car had about 10 small hail dents scattered across the hood and roof. The car was damaged during a severe thunderstorm in June of 2019, while parked at home in Bethesda, Maryland. Removing the dents on the hood was a straightforward repair process. I simply propped the hood open and slowly and methodically pushed each dent from the underside of the panel with standard PDR metal rods.

The roof dent repair was a little bit more challenging. The standard operation for removing dents from the roof of a vehicle involves removing the interior headliner so we can gain access to the underside of the metal panel. However, the headliner in this 30 year old car is made of leather and could break or tear upon removal. I decided to avoid this problem, by opening the sunroof and accessing the dents through the tiny slot between the roof and open sunroof. The access was perfect, and I was able to remove all of the roof dents with this method.

The metal sunroof also had a small dent in the center of it. This section of the car is completely sealed. I went with a “wet glue pull” strategy on this dent. A wet pull glue pull is when a PDR tech places hot glue on a plastic tab, places the tab on the top surface of the metal, and instantly pulls the tab with a lifter device. The minimal set time results in a softer pull, and less chance of pulling off fragile 30 year old paint. The wet pull worked perfectly and resulted in a dent free Porsche turbo.
