Sometimes disassembly is required for PDR

The best way to remove dents and dings with the PDR (paintless dent repair) method involves gaining access behind the damage and slowly and methodically pushing the metal back to it’s original shape. Sometimes we have to remove trim panels or even take doors off of cars in order to gain proper access and leverage.

The fastest way to remove a simple door ding is by accessing the interior side of the dented sheet metal through the window. We usually roll the window almost all of the way down, and then uses wedges and a protector board to create a small gap that we can insert our PDR hand tools through. We then use leverage to pry off of the metal and felt protector board and slowly push the dent out.

Sometimes dents are too complicated, large, or in a location on the car that prevents the fast window access technique. In this case we usually have to remove items such as interior trim panels, tail lights, head lights, bumper covers, fender liners, wire harness ports, or factory plugs. With extreme dents on doors we might have to actually remove the damaged door from the vehicle and place it on a specialized table in order to gain the proper leverage and access for an ideal paintless dent repair. Putting the door on a stand allows the PDR technician to view the damage from multiple angles and apply pressure with the ideal dent tool.

The area of the car near the rear wheel is called the quarter panel. This section is completely sealed under the wheel well. There is an inner layer of metal known as the inner wheel housing. This layer of metal prevents a PDR technician from gaining access via the wheel well. Instead we usually have to remove the tail light or interior trunk liner, in order to get behind the dent on your car.
