Does paintless dent repair work on ceramic coated cars?

For ideal paint protection on your car, ceramic coatings are a great option. Ceramic coatings use nanoparticles to form a hard glossy layer of protection on top of your car’s paint and clear coat. This can increase the appearance and strength of your car’s paint finish. These types of coatings can reduce scratches and make it easier to clean your vehicle, due to the hardness, slickness and water beading qualities of the nano coating. What if you get a dent in your car with paint sealant or ceramic finish? Don’t worry. Paintless dent repair is a fantastic option for fixing dents and dings in ceramic coated cars.

Ceramic coatings and PDR (paintless dent repair) both focus on maintaining your car’s factory OEM paint finish. Ceramic coatings protect while PDR retains the original automotive paint job on your vehicle. When performed correctly paintless dent repair does not disturb or alter the paint or coating on your car. Highly skilled PDR technicians use specialized lights and hand tools to slowly and methodically massage dents out of cars. The primary method of dent removal involves pushing the dent from the interior side of the metal panel. No body fillers, sanding, or repainting is required. Your ceramic coating is not affected by paintless dent repair.

Sometimes ceramic coatings can prevent a secondary method of paintless dent repair from working. Ideally PDR techs want to gain access behind the panel of a dented car. However, some sections of the car are completely sealed or obstructed with support beams, internal components, or multiple layers of metal. If we can not get behind the dent, PDR technicians can use the glue pulling technique. Glue pulling involves applying special hot glue to plastic tabs. We then place the tabs on the outside of the car where the dent is located. A lifting device is then used to pull the dent out. You may have seen an advertisement for a similar consumer dent lifter device. Ceramic coatings can prevent this glue from bonding to the car and thus render the PDR glue pulling technique useless for dent repair.

I have tried to glue pull a car that was coated with the popular Ceramic Pro coating. The glue tabs basically just fell off of the car. The ceramic coating prevented any type of bond. In this situation removal of the coating might be the only way to fix a dent with PDR glue pulling. Removal of the coating involves machine buffing with compound or the use of solvents. Once removed the dent can be fixed via glue pulling. The paint protective coating can then be reapplied. Dent Hero does not have the knowledge or skills to perform the removal and reapplication of a ceramic coating. If need be we have multiple high level auto detailers that we can partner with and have perform necessary removal and application of ceramic coatings. The good news, after all of these procedures your car or truck’s dent free factory OEM paint job is still intact and beautiful!
